From: Mikael Hghede Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 13:59:31 GMTI am trying to improve the quality of my XFree86 display in Linux (using an old 15 inch display). One way would be to get anti-aliasing/font smoothing to work at least for the applications I am using mainly, that is (X)Emacs / Netscape.
As X11 does not support font smoothing, the applications must be written for this. Supportedly, this should give a 4 times increased visibility.
So I wonder if anybody has a hint how this could be done, for example, do there exist any clones to these applications that support font rendering. Using for example the FreeType library it should be possible to write such an application.

From: Matt Page Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 13:14:28 GMTDoes anyone have any experience in hooking into the Windows GDI layer to provide the path to substitute glyphs across all screen and printer drivers?

From: Jeroen Mostert Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 08:51:24 GMTIf you have a .ttf file, you can install it on your machine by dragging it to your fonts folder (C:\WINDOWS\FONTS). This will allow you to use it in your website if you're using a font-enabled HTML editor such as Microsoft FrontPage. However, all users viewing the web page will need to have the font installed as well, otherwise your page gets horribly mutilated (or 'the font is substituted', as Microsoft euphemistically calls it).
You could instruct everyone to download the font, ofcourse, but a better solution could be to use the newly-developed dynamic fonts. These fonts are downloaded on-the-fly by the browser if the user has enabled them (visit http://developer.netscape.com/tech/dynhtml/index.html for more information). Unfortunately, this only works in recent versions of Netscape Communicator (as far as I know).
The best solution overall is to stick to fonts that you KNOW to be available (on a clean install of Windows 95, for example). If you're bold, take a peek into Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This is hot stuff, but perhaps a bit over the top if you merely want to use a pretty font for your page. Anyway, you can visit www.w3c.org/Style/CSS/ if you want to stay up to date.

yet most (or all) new computers with Windows-98 do not give

Why doesn't Microsoft WORD or Windows-98 include a TrueType

Apparently Corel's WordPerfect DOES give you a TrueType version
of Courier. But why not WORD?

From: Glenn Camhi Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 13:56:56 -0500Does anybody out there know of a real Courier/Typewriter TrueType font? By "real" I mean NOT the crappy MS "Courier New" which is way too thin.
Something crisp and simple but properly courier and thicker than the Courier New -- but still with a clear bold. I have one from ages ago that's a .fon type, but it isn't working with Word anymore and it produces inconsistent results on different printers.
Thank you very much, anyone who can help! Screenwriters everywhere, among others, will thank you.

From: Leslie Foraker Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 20:14:47 GMTI know this is a real basic question, but I've not found an answer anywhere in the net resources I dug up: Does 'font size' (and I'm talking specifically about Microsoft Word) equate to 'point size.?' By my estimation, 30 point type, for instance, would be a bit shy of 1/2" - 5/12 of an inch, or .415" or thereabouts. When I measure size 30 font, for instance Times New Roman, it's barely more than 1/4" tall.

well for ExtTextOut with ETO_GLYPH_INDEX.It isn't working with
GetGlyphOutline with GGO_NATIVE.I have tried GGO_GLYPH_INDEX,but
it isn't working too.It works for separate letter, because I pass
ASCII directly. My question is "How can I get correct uchar for
initial, medial and final form",because for different fonts I
must pass different values(I don't know why).I have found out
it by using GetGlyphOutline into loop(uchar 32 - 600).I got
all shapes, but result is different for different fonts. If
I use glyph array of GetCharacterPlacement,I get garbage on the
screen.Probably I need some special encoding?

I know that this is common on Macs and it's such a handy thing. Is there a windows utility that I can add on? Thanks! biggiec@iname.com?
From: Frank Scott Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 23:54:02 GMTWhen using Amasis MT, bold, 10 pt in a WORD document to be faxed with Symantec's WINFAX, the height of the type varies. This seems to happen only with 10 pt size, in both W98 and Windows NT4, when bolded, not when italicized. If you send me your fax number, I'll send you a fax illustrating this. Thanks.

From: Salman Saeed Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 16:12:29 GMTI just want to know that is there any such font editor software in which settings could be made so that text can flow from right to left. What I mean is that is there any provision in any font editor software in which the font is developed in such a way that when it is instaled in windows and then when selected in Microsoft Word, the curser (after selecting that specific font) starts moving from right to left instead of left to right.
Please answer this question.
If such font editor exists please let me know about it and from where it will be available. If you don't know about it please refer me to some one else who knows about it.

From: Gregory Himes Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 22:28:49 GMTWhat does Windows (NT/95/98) use to determine font families and locations?
I created several Truetype typefaces of which four fall into their own family. The problem is that
even though they have been created using Fontographer 4.1.2 both the "Plain" and "Bold" versions appear
properly, but the "italic" version doesn't appear at all -- just a slanted version of the plain and bold
that appear in the italic and bolditalic locations (they do appear correctly when their files are double-
clicked). This doesn't happen on my Macintosh.

From: shubhra Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 22:43:13 GMTAll characters of Wingdings do not print, such as normally used bullets (checkboxes) and arrows that are formed when you type "-->" for example, even though they appear on the screen, when ANY other font is used in the same document in Word 97 SR2. If all characters are printed as "Wingdings" then it all prints fine, but if even one character is in, say, Times Roman, only the Times Roman characters print (with bad kerning), and there is only blank paper in place where the Wingdings should be Wingding printing. The problem occurs both from my laptop and my desktop, so it can't be a CPU hardware issue. Other people are able to print my documents without a problem on their printers. And I can mix fonts in WordPad, and print without a problem, so it can't be my printer - HP5L (PCL driver). So, what's the deal? Is there something wacky (a known issue) between Word 97 and the Wingdings TTF font file? Please help!

From: Kevin D. Rosenberg Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 01:07:00 GMTIn many Latin-alphabet fonts, including Times New Roman, the minuscule f and j project over and under other letters or out into the margin. In all fonts I've seen so far, the Greek little delta has been modified for convenience not to do so; formerly looking like an ear drop with the wire extending over the following letter (like the streetlight f), it now looks much like an omicron with a circumflex -- impossible in most Greek, but plausible if an ancient alphabet without omega is being represented. Question 1: Is it correct that I can't print those fonts? Trying to select such a font into the printer device context doesn't work. Windows replaces them always with some other TTFont.
Question 2: How do I embedd my rasters into a ttf-file? Is there a program available, for free or for sale, that does such a ttf on the fly? If not, are there better instructions than the "Technical Specification Revision 1.66" for TT 1.0 Font Files form MS available? Somehow just using the EBLD and EBLC tables while throwing out glyf and loca tables doesn't give a working ttf.
Thanks for any answers.

From: Don Keogh Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 00:16:33 GMTI mostly use PostScript printers. As the printer driver I employ the Adobe Version 4.3.1 Postscript Printer Driver.
Most of my work uses the "standard" 35 fonts so though the Word8 document is often composed in Arial it's mapped to the installed Helvetica printer font.
So long as this is the case, justified text prints perfectly. But when the font is say the TrueType font Verdana the letters are printed correctly but the right hand margin is ragged and the spacing between words uneven.

Now I wan't to transfer a font from a control PC to a Display PC via a network cable:
Problem 1: You need to install the Font on the Display PC, this can be achieved with AddFontResource, but it accepts .TTF files which is great. But...
On the control PC getting the .TTF name is difficult, as you either have to Dir("C:\windows\fonts\*.ttf") or where else can I pick up the name of the TrueType from a Short Name?
It is fairly hard to program

I still do not fully understand the handling of consecutive off-curve
control points. Here is the relevant section from the page:
Where multiple off-curve points occur consecutively,
an on-curve point is interpolated exactly half-way
between them. ...
The question is "Is the on-curve point interpolated using "linear
interpolation" (i.e. midpoint of straight line between points) or
some other form of interpolation."?
How do I install a font if Windows 95 says it is corrupt?
I tried taking a font out via Windows Explorer to my desktop and putting it back in - same results so I think it is not my slicker.ttf font - plus I downloaded another version of slicker.ttf at http:/www.truetype.demon.co.uk/ttqa97.htm, so... I am not sure what to do next.

I notice this is not something that is done on the majority of TrueType web sites.

Any Suggestions?
Thank you in advance
However, I have not seen any advice on how to create the superb graphics
oriented fonts seen in some terrrific publications.
The example I am referring to is a word that appears to be in an OUTLINE font
with the enlarged, bolded edges in one color and the interior of the letter appearing
in an entirely different color or blend of colors.
You often see this effect used in titles of programs on the TV.
How is this effect created? Is it an add-in filter, a special program,
or just a painfully detailed Ilustrator or Photoshop technique?
Are vector fonts or truetype fonts used to create this effect?
Do you know of any Web sites that explain how to do this?
Thank You for any suggestions you may be able to provide that
will help learn how to do this.

Download Truetype fonts to HP
From: Christian Kindarji
Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 02:21:09 GMT
I was wondering if there was any way to download a truetype font to an HP printer or else if there was a way to translate the Truetype font into a font that an HP would understand so that I could call it using an ESC sequence. The project that I have is to print signatures (loaded into a TT font) using a DOS program on checks. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello;
Convert .fon to .ttf
From: Hebron Mak
Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 20:48:26 GMT
I have some text files that were produced in the DOS environment, so it uses code page 437. I now want to be able to view these files in Windows. In Word 97, if I set the font to Terminal, then I see the right characters (particularly the extended ASCII). However, Terminal is not a TTF and using the printers at work, I can only use TTF in Word. Is there a way to convert this font to a TTF? Or are there other TTFs that I can use to view this text file (once again, it MUST use code page 437)? Thanks!
